KES athletes produce solid & sound results at Gauteng Champs 2017
13 March 2017
The Gauteng Athletics Championships for 2017 were held at Germiston Athletics Stadium over the weekend of the 10th – 11th March.

Report back from MIC, Mr Thorne:

' Seventeen King Edward VII athletes represented D9 (Johannesburg East) at these Championships. Essentially there were 14 districts from the entire Gauteng. This includes the Pretoria region as well. Athletics doesn’t split between Johannesburg and Pretoria like cricket and rugby, therefore ALL the school districts compete in Gauteng compete against each other.

Generally speaking there are 28 athletes per event and in most cases heats, semi-finals and then finals. Therefore just by making the finals is an achievement on its own. 13 of our athletes made finals.

Our athletes performed solidly enough with some boys learning some valuable lessons in the fact that maybe competing in 3 x events is too much over 2 days, especially when there are heats and semi-finals for these events.

David Seete was unlucky as he had to withdraw from the 200m and 400m due to an injury. He was hopefully going to medal in those events, but that’s sport and injuries are part and parcel of competing. The good thing for David is that he is only U16 and he has 2018 to challenge again at the U17 200m and 400m events.

Rebotile Mohale ran a solid 100m and could have pushed for a medal place if he didn’t get such a poor start, added to that his favoured even being the hurdles he pulled out during the race which was a pity. Lessons learnt here for 2018.

Joseph Iye can also learn that falling back after a great jump in the U17 triple jump can take you from a medal spot all the way to 10th place. Connor Parkinson was also a bit unlucky as he finished in a good 2nd place in his 400m heat but failed to qualify due to his time. Athletes need to be aware of the criteria of how one makes a final. Sometimes they work on times, other times on places with the fastest 2 x losers going through for lanes 7 and 8. Again, tough lessons, but good lessons to learn for 2018.

Below are the results from the FINALS at the championships, if an athlete was knocked out during the heats I haven’t listed/recorded their time, distance or height.

S Freeman U19 – 800m – 6th, 1500m final – 7th
I Molefe U19 – Triple jump 1st (new record 14m47cm), Long Jump 4th

P Mulea U15 – Discus 10th
K V D Colff U15 – High Jump 11th

Congratulations Team Red, we are very proud of your efforts and achievements this term. The Athletics Club athletes work many hours during the week along with their coaches and the future of athletics at King Edward is steady, strong and bright.

Go School.
